As a response to the COVID-19 Pandemic the Togo Ministry of Health decided it was imperative to plan and build an Infectious Disease Center in Kara, Togo. As part of the comprehensive masterplan Integrate Health (IH) will be funding a Outpatient Clinic and a Laboratory near the entry of the new Infectious Disease Campus. IH engaged Construction for Change (CfC) and Adaptiv to design and build the new facilities. The bulk of the design work occurred at the height of the pandemic with the US based Adaptiv team unable to travel to West Africa. The CfC implementation team based on the ground in Kara, Togo proved essential for developing the design with an understanding of local building practices and material availability. The facility is currently in the bidding process and will begin construction mid 2021.

The building form is meant to provide natural ventilation and daylighting strategies while fitting in with the context of the remainder of that had already been designed. The roof form provides a flooding of natural light into the corridor spaces and encourages air movement. This strategy aims to limit the dependency on electric sources.
A team of local women will be engaged to design and paint the patterning that envelopes a portion of the facade. By engaging local women led organizations we hope to provide an opportunity for community education and empowerment.
